The experts at Nordic Offset designed Cinia’s short-term and long-term emission reduction targets based on the international Science-based targets initiative (SBTi). The purpose of the initiative is to promote climate actions in the private sector and help companies set sufficiently ambitious and science-based emission reduction goals that are in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
It was the first time Nordic Offset calculated the organisation’s carbon footprint for the year 2021 for Cinia, a digital solutions and cyber security services company. In accordance with the greenhouse gas protocol, the calculation covered the mandatory scope 1 and 2 emissions and partially voluntary scope 3 emissions.
Cinia has set a short-term emission reduction goal. By 2024, the carbon footprint per employee should be no more than 70% of the emissions in 2021.
In addition to its own short-term goal, Cinia’s climate work is guided by the Government Resolution on State Ownership Policy, which stipulates that companies must recognise the climate impact of their own operations as well as establish ambitious goals in this respect compared with their peer companies. State-owned companies are required to observe the government’s objective of a carbon neutral Finland by 2035 and the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees.
Based on these parameters, Nordic Offset mapped out the short-term and long-term emission reduction targets and measures for Cinia. The science-based reference framework of the international Science-based targets initiative (SBTi) and industry-specific guidelines of the ICT sector were applied to the planning work to determine the guidelines of Cinia’s long-term goal for 2035. The experts at Nordic Offset specified the targets and illustrated the required emission reduction actions to reach them. In addition, the work presented development proposals for carbon footprint monitoring.
Nordic Offset’s plan gave Cinia clear guidelines for planning their climate actions, as well as concrete examples for optimising emission reduction measures.
